If you know me, you’ll know I’m a pretty easy going person. The notion of traditions and rules was just never my vibe. And so when I post for social media, sometimes I feel like I’m just doing it for show. Half the time, I didn’t even know it WAS a tradition until social media told me it was cuz my parents too, were easy going with traditions. My mom picked and chose which Chinese rules to follow and which to ignore (mostly due to religious reasons… or just being lazy LOL too mah fan).
I would say that my family and I now celebrate traditions “lightly”. It’s never rigid. If we do it one year and not the next, it won’t bother me the slightest. But I do love learning more and more about my own culture. Makes me feel “more Chinese” than I ever felt before. ❤❤
Ingredients:
4-5 chicken drumsticks or whatever chicken you have
2 cups water
2 cups chicken broth
1/2 white onion
Minced garlic
2 Chinese sausage (lap cheung)
1/2 large daikon radish
1/2 cup glutinous flour
1/4 water
Parboil the chicken. Then Chop up sausage, peeled daikon and onion. Heat up pot and saute those items with the minced garlic. Pour in liquids and boil/simmer for an hour.
Meanwhile, combine the flour and water together and mix till a play dough paste. Roll into small balls and boil in a separate pot until floating. When the soup is ready, transfer the tong yuan into the soup. Serve and enjoy!
